Breast Reconstruction

Back to Normal

Women who want to restore the size, shape, and symmetry of their breasts after undergoing surgery for breast cancer or to prevent breast cancer

The Procedure

Breast reconstruction is performed under general anesthesia by using your native tissue or by breast implants to create a breast mound. These procedures can be done at these occasions:

  • immediate reconstruction at the same time as your mastectomy
  • delayed reconstruction on any time after your surgery

The extent of the cancer and your preference will help determine the best plan for you

Overall Reconstruction

Creating a nipple and areola is the last surgical stage of the reconstructive process.  For women who have undergone a nipple-sparing mastectomy, this procedure is not necessary.  Most patients choose to undergo nipple and areola reconstruction as it leads to a more natural appearance and can help hide part of the mastectomy scar.

Recovering

Dependent upon the technique chosen, most patients return to normal daily activities in 7-10 days and to their regular routine in 1 month

Fat Grafting

This procedure is often used in breast reconstruction. Fat is harvested by liposuction from one area of your body and injected to the breast to add volume or correct the contour

Results

The final results helps lessen the physical and emotional impact of mastectomy. Most women report a large improvement in their ability to look and feel whole again
